| South Carolina is considering a bill to create the most aggressive DNA collection program in the US, instructing police to take genetic samples from people arrested in any crime including misdemeanours such as shoplifting for state and national DNA databases. Most states collect DNA from convicted felons but South Carolina would be the 1st requiring a sample from anyone arrested in any crime. Civil libertarians say DNA databases strip people of the presumption of innocence and impinge on 4th Amendment protections from unreasonable searches. |
